Abstract
Purpose: Patients who have undergone radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) have an increased risk of developing inguinal hernia (IH). The aim of this study is to analyze clinical characteristics of post-RRP IHs.

Methods: Incidences of specific diseases and operations from June 1999 to July 2010 were studied using medical records and the Order Communication System from Chungbuk National University Hospital. Statistical analyses were completed by Student t-test¡¯s, Person¡¯s chi-square tests (SPSS 12.0 KO for windows) and P£¼0.05 was considered significant.

Results: During the study period, 327 IH repairs, 223 RRPs (Group I), 208 colorectal surgeries (CRS) (Group II), and 590 transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) (Group III) were performed for patients over the age of 40 years. IHs occurred in 16 patients (7.2%) 9 months (2¡67 months) after RRPs, in 5 patients (2.4%) 37 months (2¡59 months) after CRSs, and in 3 patients (0.5%) 11 month (10¡25 months) after TUR-Ps. Median age at IH repairs was 68 (61¡78), 68 (55¡84), and 72 (70¡78) years old for Group I, II, and III respectively. Laterality of IHs (Right : Left : Bilateral) was 9:2:5, 1:1:3, 1:1:1 for Group I, II, and III respectively. All post-RRP IHs were repaired by plug and patch techniques. No clinical recurrences or untreatable complications had occurred.

Conclusion: Presentation of IHs is relatively frequent after RRPs, compared with CRSs, and can be easily corrected with open mesh repairs.
